SURPRISINGLY, GIVEN THE RELATIVELY MINOR MEDIA ATTENTION TO DATE, ALMOST 3/4 OF NEW YORKERS AND MORE THAN 1/2 OVERALL SAY THEY ARE FOLLOWING THE NEWS "VERY" OR "SOMEWHAT" CLOSELY.

IF THE MOSQUE ISSUE WERE TO BECOME A MORE INTENSE ISSUE, IT POLITICALLY COULD POSE A THREAT TO THE DEMOCRATIC BASE. IN NY NOT ONLY DO 70% OF GOP AND OTHER VOTERS OPPOSE THE MOSQUE BUT SO DO DEMOCRATS, BY A MARGIN OF 49% to 25%; BLACKS BY 52%- 22%; MODERATES 56%-16%. INDEED, NY LIBERALS ONLY NARROWLY FAVOR THE MOSQUE, 40%-36%.

(THE EARLIER LARGE SAMPLE NYC POLL FOUND SIMILAR PATTERNS. INDEED IN THIS DEMOCRATIC LIBERAL BASTION HISPANICS WERE OPPOSED BY 60%-19%; JEWS BY 66%-22%; AND WHITE CATHOLICS 66%-24%)


THE NATIONAL BREAKDOWNS ALREADY GENERALLY FOLLOW THE SAME TREND: BLACKS OPPOSED 49%-26%; INDEPENDENTS 50%-17%; SENIORS 67%-7% ; AND DEMOCRATS 36% OPPOSED 34% IN FAVOR WITH 29% UNSURE. IF SUCH DEVELOPS IT COULD POTENTIALLY FRACTURE THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY BASE COALITION.
