The quickly accumulating sea-ice on the Northern Sea Route is creating a potentially critical situation along Russia's east Arctic coast. For several weeks, a number of ships have been trapped in thick sea-ice.

Often the headline story on The Anchorage Daily News The Daily Worker would be some reporting on how all of Alaska was melting and we were all going to have to trim the palm trees for a living by Next Tuesday ™. Right under said story would be another report about how the port in Nome had frozen a month early and the proletariat there were all going to die because the last fuel and grocery barge could not reach them. Of course we believed both stories with all our hearts.
